We are a family business that was established over 30 years ago. Downe farm is run by Vanessa Cheffings, who is ably assisted by Clare Wilson, the head girl, and by Tim Cheffings, Vanessa’s son.

 We specialise in backing and starting young horses and introducing them to competitions. First at unaffiliated and then affiliated competitions in whichever sphere their talent lies. We are also delighted to help you train and compete your horse at whatever level/discipline you choose.

We have been backing horses for thirty years, often 25-30 a year. We have great experience in re-schooling difficult horses and helping them develop their potential. We also have clinics with visiting instructors, and offer all the services to be expected in a professional yard,i.e.clipping, trimming, plaiting, cross country schooling, etc.

Selling a horse can be a difficult and time consuming task, We have the facilities to show horses to their best advantage and always try to match the horse to the right buyer. 10% commission is charged if the horse is sold within 1 month, otherwise no commission is charged, only the weekly livery fee.

We are able to offer a service for injured horses. We have a round pen that is ideal as a safe turn out area. We also have a horse walker and an Equisage massage machine to assist healing
